Iron and pregnancy
The need for iron increases substantially during pregnancy.
Women require about 1,000 mg of additional iron during
pregnancy. What is all that iron used for?
300 mg used by fetus and placenta
450 mg used to increase mother's red blood cell mass
250 mg lost at delivery
Iron deficiency anemia at the beginning
of pregnancy increases the risk of preterm
delivery and low-birth-weight infants by
two to three times. Your prenatal vitamin
likely contains iron, but for some women
it may be necessary to add additional
iron during pregnancy.

WARNING: Hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis are contraindications to iron therapy. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.
